Gospel dynamo Kim Burrell has being going non-stop since the death of her dear friend Whitney Houston.
Already in high demand after releasing her critically acclaimed “The
Love Album” in 2011, Burrell’s visibility heightened once mainstream
media discovered Houston often attended services at Burrell’s
Houston-based church, The Love & Liberty Fellowship. Additionally,
Houston’s last televised performance was a duet with Burrell on BET’s
“Celebration of Gospel” in early 2011.
The two performed a spirit-filled rendition of Houston’s R. Kelly penned single, “I Look To You.”
The 39-year-old preacher/singer, who performed a personalized rendition of Sam Cooke’s
“A Change Is Gonna Come” at Houston’s televised homegoing service,
believes that Houston would want her to play a spiritual leader in the
life of her family.
“Whitney left me with a lot of work to do,” she expressed to me, during a conversation after performing a tribute to gospel duo Mary Mary at the Essence Music Festival.
The Houston-bred vocalist will appear on Lifetime’s “The Houston
Family Chronicles,” the 10 episode, hour-long docu-series that will show
her along with Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston; daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown; sister-in-law and manager Pat Houston; her husband, Gary; and their daughter, Rayah; working to move past the singer’s death.
In addition to her appearance on “The Houston Family Chronicles,”
Burrell, known for her intricate vocal arrangements and unmatched her
voice acrobatics, will honor Houston in song as well.
“I’m finishing a commemorative project in honor of Whitney Houston,”
she shared.
The divorced mother of one is also in talks with Black Entertainment
Television about a reality show of her own. For the last four years,
Burrell has worked as a vocal coach and a guest judge on BET’s hit
competition series “Sunday Best.”
